For those of you who dont already know, Im Muslim. Does that scare you? Its perfectly fine to feel fear towards the unknown, but I ask that you try to identify the cause of that fear and ask me about it. I would be happy to discuss principles of Islam with you. But if youre ignorant enough to believe that groups like ISIS represent my faith, please delete me now. Living in this country has proved to be an enormous hardship for Muslim Americans as were forced to endure passive-aggressive jokes about 9/11 being our responsibility. Were forced to face that negative connotation of Islam every day of our lives. I do understand that its an easy solution for people to find a scapegoat to associate with all of the wrongs in the world, but that is exactly what this is. Albeit it is not commonly spoken aloud, it is demonstrated through everyday occurrences that people of color are still seen as foreigners or as inferior in this country. People tend to push the faults of their own people onto the outsiders because theyre afraid to embrace the reality that they, too, are responsible. Weve seen the extent of this inequality all too often as of late, following the Brown shooting, the #ifiweregunneddown tagging, standing by as guilty black men are sentenced to death while guilty white men are deemed insane for the same crime. I dont judge any religion or race based on their infamy, and all I ask is that you try not to give into it either. Im here to say that the terrorist groups Al-Qaeda and ISIS claim to be Islamic, and yet their actions entirely violate the principles of my faith. They do not represent Muslims, and it sickens me when I read articles or Facebook posts associating their actions with a religion that literally translates to Peace. I do not belong to a violent religion. I am not a terrorist. Im a Muslim American who has already left this world in a better place in her mere 19 years than all these hotshot A-listers who spend their lives contributing to racial and religious inequality. These people are a disgrace to humanity. So please, if you have any questions about Islam, dont be afraid to comment or message me.
