For those of you who dont know, #Iraq is the only country in the world which celebrates 8 different New Year celebrations, among them the worlds oldest of them all, which starts on April 1 and lasts for 12 days. Akitu, the Babylonian-Assyrian New Year (in its 6764th year now!), is today celebrated by Iraqs indigenous Assyrian community (who today follow the Christian religion). Happy Akitu to you all! ** The name is from the Sumerian for barley, originally marking two festivals celebrating the beginning of each of the two half-years of the Sumerian calendar, marking the sowing of barley in autumn and the cutting of barley in spring. In Babylonian religion it came to be dedicated to Marduks victory over Tiamat. It has been proposed that Thanksgiving may be able to trace its earliest recorded origins to this ancient Mesopotamian harvest festival.
