For those of you who’ve been following the story of the opening through Norton Point Beach and the erosive effect this inlet has had on the southern shoreline of Chappaquiddick in the last three years, we have a rare opportunity to see how the coastline has changed with regard to a manmade object that has not moved at all. This takes a little time to go through, so may we suggest you brew a cup of tea, have a seat, and click through the following six images at your leisure. The changes you’ll see since 1991 (and then since 2012, and then in the last half-year, and then in just the last four weeks) will look quite dramatic, because we now have a fixed point to compare them to. Up front, we thank Woody Filley, Skip Bettencourt, Dan Gaines and especially Bob Gilkes, a full-time captain of the Chappy ferry who has paid meticulous attention to the erosion along the Chappaquiddick shoreline since it began to retreat in response to the opening through the nearby barrier beach. Without the faithfulness of these observers to the cause, we would not have the record you’re about to see – and perhaps marvel over:
