For those that saw the project screenshot I put up recently, the finished video is live. Here you go. The final project screenshot is in the comments below the post. Workflow: I shot this with a Canon 6D and Canon EOS M. I generally set up all my projects the same with footage by camera in one folder, audio in another, graphics in another, etc. These are imported into FCP X with folders as Keywords so when the media gets into FCP X it is already organized. I then add Keywords as needed during the project. Pluraleyes 3 was used to sync the footage and audio (though I think FCP X could have done well on this one I just felt like using Pluraleyes). Then exported Event and multicam clip and sent it to FCP X to a Library I had already set up for the project. With multicam I selected the external audio as the audio very first thing and applied a compressor to it to strengthen the dialogue. Volume was adjusted as needed after that as I worked. I then just cut between the two video angles as needed. With only two angles I didnt even need the angle viewer, just used the 1 and 2 keys to switch video angles. The music was split into two pieces so I could time the ending with the flow of the music. I did a simple crossfade to blend the two pieces in a more neutral part of the melody and where the volume was lower for the music. Basic exposure and contrast balance was done in FCP X using the color board and shape masking system to focus the image on the speaker. After the interview section was locked I did something a little different for the color grade. I turned off all B roll and overlays and I exported the Interview shots as a tiff image sequence. I then imported those into Lightroom and used those tools to finish the look and balance the two different angles. I then exported those frames and used Motion 5 to create a ProRes video from them (FCP X really needs image sequence as a video clip support). I then reimported and lined it up under the B roll. It fit back in perfectly and in sync. It was a bit convoluted workflow but I have some color tools in Lightroom that I dont have in other programs. Over top of everything I overlaid a 35mm film grain scan. With the subject matter I wanted a more organic look (though I think a lot of that is lost due to Youtube compression). The beginning and end pieces where created in After Effects by my brother (who also designed the logos and look of their brand cotopaxi ). Heres his LinkedIn: linkedin/profile/view?id=7138846&locale=en_US&trk=tyah&trkInfo=tarId%3A1396752148624%2Ctas%3ATyler%2Cidx%3A1-2-2 The maps with the tracked GPS point I created in Motion 5.1. At first there was a line that connected the logos to the GPS dot that stretched as the map moved but we got rid of that in the end. The part where he talks about the music fest that shows footage from the bands playing has a graphic with their names. It was animated on with a simple circle mask plugin from Coremelt. All the orange overlay sections were created by switching the lower footage to black and white, throwing an orange color solid over top and setting the blend mode to multiply. Compound clips kept the B roll organized and clean. It also made it easy to crossfade groups of items. I like using keyframes or sliders with opacity to crossfade. I rarely use transitions for that. More control. Hope you enjoy and join in if you are in the area.
