For those too young to remember. In 1995 or thereabouts, a couple of journalists revealed that America was installing bugs in the new Chinese embassy as it was being built in Canberra. Labor’s Gareth Evans wanted to charge the journalists under the Crimes Act for divulging sensitive intelligence information. The truth seemed to be that the Americans were not so much interested in security as in trade. By bugging the Chinese embassy, they could get a heads-up on prices Australia was negotiating with China for commodities we were selling to it in competition against the US. This meant their guys could gazump ours. Fortunately, Labor lost an election before Evans could put his threat into action. Today, Labor will not comment on the allegations of spying on Indonesia, but will just sit back and enjoy the sycophantic media’s attempts to paint Abbott as the bad guy. What is more, with resignations of Carr and Rudd after promising to serve a full term even if Labor lost this year’s election still in the news, who could forget Gareth Evans’ monumental dummy spit on election night in 1996 when Labor lost government. Without even bothering to let his boss know in advance, he advised the nation live during the vote count that he would not bother taking his seat in the new parliament; he was quitting there and then. Yes, this mob has pretty good form in terms of contempt for the people, and for the integrity of their offices.
