BLIND CURVES AHEAD OCTOBER 2001 MID THIRD TERM BREAK ..... Like a true gentleman I didn’t want to be late and make her wait. I started to dress up for the occasion. I took a shower with a perfumed body-wash. I wanted to look dashing and impress her. I tried every hair style known to me standing in front of a body sized mirror. I wasn’t able to make up my mind as to what style will suit me most. I even tried changing combs to come up with the flair which would compliment the desired suave look. I have always had a problem with my hair style. I have very thin and soft hair and thus it is next to impossible task to keep them arranged in any particular fashion. Even a moderate breeze ruffles them up. Till the last spray of perfume, I wasn’t sure about my dressing. I smelled of all the deodorants and perfumes available with my shack mates. I took a brief guidance about the place from an auto driver at the nearby taxi-stand and accelerated my bike. I was running behind the schedule. I could reach my destination twenty five minutes late after being guided and also misguided on one occasion, by strangers en route. After parking my bike at the designated place, I reached the main entrance of the restaurant. It had ‘Smugglers Inn’ glowing with florescent green and red light on the hoarding placed on the top of the main door. On one side of the hoarding was a picture of an old ship sailing in turbulent waters and the other side had a mysterious face of a cigar smoking man with a pirate hat on his head. Both of these were also glowing with various colourful florescent lights. The hoarding coupled with tunes of western music coming from inside gave a kabbalistic look to the place. Look of the place made me apprehensive about my date. Once again, my confidence was shaking. For a fleeting second, I had even considered backing out at the last moment. It was an equally tough decision as if to choose ‘whether to go up or to go down when one’s tool is caught in the zipper’. I did not want to get lost in the crowd inside and thus dialled her to confirm the mark of recognition so as to find her easily. Every passing moment incremented my diffidence. She informed me that she was waiting for me at the right hand corner most table of the restaurant lawn. I asked for the direction from the gate keeper and made my way towards the lawn. I crossed main dining hall and reached at the opening for the lawn. I scooted my eyes in right hand corner most direction and the sight transformed my apprehension into panic. I had felt a slight tremble in my legs. I could see a girl sitting at the dimly lit corner with her back towards me. But this wasn’t the reason for panic stroke. What alarmed me was the graffiti on her T-shirt’s back. It had the painting of two bones making a cross in front of a hollow skull, the famous danger mark, and ‘BEWARE’ written under it in some terrifying font with blood red colour. Subconsciously, all of us start analyzing a stranger by his attire, body language and every possible thing associated with him. The danger mark on her back reminded me of high voltage current and I was shaking as if it was passed through me. My mouth went dry. It was too much to handle for me on my first date. In these moments of despair, I started chanting ‘Hanuman Chalisha’ to build up my strength. It was indeed funny. Of all the thirty three crore gods of Hindu mythology, I wanted forever-bachelor lord Hanuman to help me in my supposed-to-be-a-romantic date. The realisation of the humour had helped me to get back to some what closer to being normal. I started in her direction with an artificial and fake confident smile on my lips. As I neared the table, she stood up with a sensuous smile on her lips for a handshake. When my eyes slipped from her glowing face, I saw second half of the graffiti. On her breast hugging part of T-shirt was written ‘BLIND CURVES AHEAD’ in a curvy word-art in red coloured bold font. The warning, ‘BEWARE!! BLIND CURVES AHEAD’, was indeed statutory. I was blinded by the curves underneath in a fraction of second. I had frozen with my gaze still fixed at the warning. My mouth fell open for sure; whether it watered or not, I don’t remember exactly. ...
