For those who may be interested, Califone still offers a classroom record player, the model 1005AV; but, its nothing like the older models. In fact, this one looks more like a Crosley than a traditional Califone. This thing may have a slightly more robust amp than a Crosley; but, I can promise you that the turntable mechanism came from the same place as the Crosley turntable mechanisms. It plays at 78 rpm; but, like the Crosleys, all you get is an LP needle. Also, notice the absence of metal corner protectors and there is also no headphone jack. IMHO, one would do much better with buying an older unit, fixing it up, and it would last for another 20+ years. Im sure that in a few years, these 1005AVs will be on the surplus market for a cheap price and I might have to get one in order to take it apart. So, does anyone have one of these for playing 78s?
