For those who missed my January forecast on NECN this morning, its in todays Forecast Video. Hope to get a full blog post out today, but bottom line is in the video, and includes...I expect a sharp jet stream trough over the Northeast for first half of January - this means much colder than normal by next week. The jet stream trough will retrograde and relax by mid-month to third week of January, and cold may ease *a bit*. Biggest issue in January is very favorable pattern in Canada to keep surface cold in place, available to the Northern Tier including NewEng. Even as warmer air aloft makes a move toward New England mid-month, likely to be undercut by dense & stubborn cold at surface. This will put New England on north side of active storm track that dumps wetter than normal SE US to Mid-Atlantic. Though Southern New England precip may be close to norm in Jan, northern side of storm track likely means near/slightly above norm snow. If this prediction is correct, will feel like a decent amount of snow coming off snowless December in Southern NewEng. Interestingly, Northern NewEng to be enough into the cold air we may actually see North Country slightly drier than norm this month. So, this is a primer for the forecast youll see at the start of the video. mnoy.es/1EJfxLk
