For what its worth: I was listening to public radio today, and a professor referring to himself as a member of the Academy, referred to free speech and freedom of academic freedom that must be allowed to academia. He said that academia are by their nature agnostics. My only wonder is would he allow me a belief in a God that I cannot prove to exist but that he cannot prove does not exist. In many campuses, nowadays, you are not only rejected if you try to discuss God/Christianity. You are sometimes forced off campus, for instance, Crusade for Christ being forced off many Ivy League campuses. Wow I believe that Wiccans, atheist, agnostics, Muslim, Jews, etc., all have a right to state their believes in an open forum and freedom of speech, I am not sure that academia in general and the University of Illinois in particular would agree with that. Furthermore, the comments were made this reference to a person who had been hired to post at the University but him and then posted vicious and profane comments concerning the Jewish people. We live in a country which has made illegal hate crimes, and I believe I hate speech. Freedom of hate speech seems to be contradictory to the current cultural norms in the United States. Should we allow somebody who freely uses hate speech to be a member of academia? I have no objection if a university wants to except such a person. They have freedom to do so. However the governance at the University of Illinois has the freedom to reject this person has having practice hate speech which many of his future students would find very intimidating. If, for instance, I had been hired to teach biology but I refused to discuss anything except a Christian definition of the age of the earth; the evolution of man; etc., I would expect the university to question my credentials. I believe freedom of speech needs to be conducted in an arena where freedom of speech exists. I am not any longer sure where you can find that. What are your thoughts?
