For whatever reason, I got into a sax and strings thing over the weekend. Bird. Bud Shank. Stitt. Jacquet. Getz. And the one that totally blew me away, in a very relaxed way, was SCOTT HAMILTON WITH STRINGS, with arrangements by Alan Broadbent. While Jacquet with strings sounds like they were grafted on, Broadbent and Hamilton are simpatico; the zen with strings album; seamless, not syrupy. And Broadbent lets the strings state the melody at times, take the bridge, and go beyond simply being a lush backdrop. Heres one sublime example.
