Foreign Minister participates in the 17th Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement May 29, 2014 Algeria – Foreign Minister H.E. Zarar Ahmad Osmani heading the Afghan delegation attended in the 17th meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Algiers, capital of the Democratic Republic of Algeria. During this meeting, Mr. Osmani delivered speech on current situation in Afghanistan as well as underlined Afghan government’s support of the fundamental principle of (NAM). Mr. Osmani also added: “Afghanistan experienced historical and amazing presidential and provincial council elections on April 5 where nearly seven million Afghans cast their votes in a peaceful atmosphere. The April 5th elections that praised by world leaders were a great success for young democracy in Afghanistan. Our National Security Forces provided safe and secure environment for the Afghan people in more than 6,200 ballots centers nationwide to elect their new political leadership and representatives of provincial council”. Mr. Osmani also pointed out that: “Our scholars and religious leaders, as well as free and independent media played a significant role in raising public awareness and encouraged them to participate in the elections. Above all, the positive momentum flowing from this outstanding moment gave a tremendous boost to the confidence of the Afghan people, and reflected the will and determination of our nation to the path of peace, development and consolidation of the country’s achievements in the past decade; the goals consistent to the overall objectives of this meeting in order to strengthen the solidarity for peace and harmony.” Besides, Mr. Osmani held bilateral meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Azerbaijan, Iraq and Venezuela. At the meeting with the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister discussed the quadrilateral meeting recently held between Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia for the implementation of the new transit route to connect Afghanistan via Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia to Black Sea and the wider world. Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan assured of his country’s preparation for holding this meeting in the near future. Moreover, in a meeting with the foreign minister of Iraq, Mr. Osmani discussed the problems of Afghan Shiite pilgrims travelling to Iraq and proposed that Afghan Consulate delegation work together with the Iraqi Foreign Ministry to find solution to the problems. Iraqi Foreign Minister promised that he will assign the relevant authorities to invite the Afghan consulate delegation by making appropriate arrangements for solving the problems altogether.
