Foreign minister Barnaba Benjamin has announced that Cyril - TopicsExpress

Foreign minister Barnaba Benjamin has announced that Cyril Ramaphosa would mediate in talks following a ceasefire in South Sudan. This sounds interesting in a number of ways. First, IGAD mediation team is already mediating. Second, it is not clear if the decision was made by the IGAD summit or by President Zuma without consultations. Third, the regional powers, Kenya & Ethiopia, might not warmly welcome Ramaphosa just like Mbeki and Odinga were not well received when they tried to mediate in the Ivorian crisis in 2011. Fourth, could this South African initiative set-up another forum, that would undermine the on-going process being facilitated by Mesfin & Sumbeiywo? Fifth, Does South Africa have another interest and it is joining the mediation at the invitation of the region. Sixth, would Nigeria also follow suit and offer Obsanjo as a mediator? Seventh, does this imply the crisis is too difficult for IGAD to handle alone? etc. citypress.co.za/politics/cyril-ramaphosa-mediate-south-sudan/
