Forever in our hearts and on our minds…….. 1LT Joshua Deese / KIA, October 15, 2006 / C/Co 2-35IN Cacti My brother, 1LT Joshua Deese, gave his life for this country and a belief in a better life for all. During my brother’s first tour in Afghanistan (2004) he decided no matter what the reasons the government had for being in that foreign land, his was there to provide hope for the children and women so brutally abused and miss treated. He would talk to me sometimes of the horrible things he had to witness and assist with, in the Red Cross rescue shelters. So, do I think it was unfair that he died at the young age of 25? Of course! But, do I know he gave his life for what he believed in? Most definitely!!! My brother loved God, his son, his Momma, and the Army, and in that order. Everyone who know Josh, knew he was a great guy, full of fun, and a hard worker. Our very strict, country upbringing made my brother feel right at home in the Army and among the finest Rangers around. He made many friends everywhere he went. The unit First Sergeant told us, “I didn’t know how LT was able to get all the stuff he did for the Unit. LT was able to turn on the country charm and get almost anything we needed.” I had just spoken with Josh at 2:00 am on October 15, 2006. He had just come in from a mission, and was doing a few moral calls. I remember rolling out of bed (literally rolling, as I was six months pregnant), to sneak into the bathroom so I could talk quietly with him. I teased him of how I had just baked his favorite, Red Velvet cake, for the Fort Hood, G6 soldiers my husband worked with. We talked, laughed and discussed his plans once he returned to the states and of his upcoming reenlistment. So, you can only imagine what a surprise it was when only 6 hours later I get a call from our Mom telling me Josh was killed, and I needed to come back to NC. This news crushed our whole family, his friends, and his unit. We have all lived on in our daily lives, but there has never been a day I don’t think of my brother and miss him so much. I often wonder how much life would be different if he would not have been killed over there. Our family has had the pleasure of meeting some of his soldiers, his commander and the visiting the unit he served with. So, many wonderful displays at the Schofield Barracks, Hawaii base, commemorating Josh and all the other fallen soldiers who paid the price for country and mission. The famous say is so true: “All gave some, but some gave all.” So, please, never forget the price a fallen soldier has paid, nor the family they have left behind to live on without them. The blood those soldiers shed may have been on foreign soil, but it was all so a BULLY wouldn’t come and take what we hold so dear…OUR FREEDOM! You can find more about Joshua on his memorial page, Joshua Deese Memorial Page. We also have a scholarship set up in his honor through the NC 4-H Extension Office. His memorial page also has more information on the scholarship if you would like to donate on his behalf. Others have also posted to his guest book on Legacy under, 1st LT Joshua Deese. Rest in peace little brother….I will see you again in Heaven one day…
