Great value! I want to share with you a tip on visiting Crete, in my experience. I booked into a studio apartment at Wooden Shoe Apartments via Airbnb. Visiting Crete in October means it is much less busy, less swelteringly hot- but still summery (temps in the 20s to low 30s C (70-80s F) & the ocean is at its warmest & perfect for swimming. Places like the Wooden Shoe are generally open to Nov, so you still have wide choices. I will write up a blog post with more info in a few weeks after Ive finished my trip & the conference, but syffice it to say that as a solo traveller who isnt interested in partying, this apt & area has been good. 1 week has cost about 150€ to rent and as i can cook meals is quite a bargain foodwise too! Bus stops frequently right down from the apt to go other places. Is a pleasant 10 min stroll to the uncrowded beach (es). There doesnt seem to be air conditioning but with the great ceiling fan I havent needed it. Dont think Id say the same if was summer, tho, as I am not a heat lover. But now, it is ideal.
