Format for the Cut-Throat Competition: Cut-Throat is not a - TopicsExpress

Format for the Cut-Throat Competition: Cut-Throat is not a sanctioned format in Petanque, yet it should be as it is an excellent way of teaching strategy. It is played between three persons and in this case each with 4 boules. Games can be lengthy and for this competition, will be restricted to 11 points. Depending upon the total number of participants, the aim will be to play at least 4 games. Grouping will be random. At the end of the preset number of preliminary games, the top THREE players with the most wins and points difference in their favor will duke it out for 1st, 2nd, 3rd. in a final played to 13 points (50% - 30% - 20% division of the winnings). The top three players will be chosen according to the number of games won, and in the event of a tie, by the players having the least total amount of points scored against them. The start of play will be decided just like normal with the toss of coin. Everything else is like a regular game. The person furthest from the other two players boule plays until he is closer to the cochonet than one of his opponents boule or until he runs out of boules etc etc.. Points are scored by one player only and according to the number of boules he has closer to the cochonet than either of his opponents. In the following hand, the one who scored previously throws the cochonet next and the second player will be the person that was next closest. In the event that a cochonet is hit out of bounds, BOTH of his opponents need to be without remaining boules in order to score if he himself still holds boules. And now the fun begins. It is in theory possible for two medium players to easily defeat a top player IF the two medium players decide to gang up. It would be the equivalent of playing 3 boules against 6. I wont spoil it by giving other tips, these youll have to work out on your own. Let the fun begin :)
