QUESTION: If God is merciful how can He send a person to hell.? ANSWER: That God is merciful is certainly true. In fact, is speaks much about His mercy toward all, The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. Psm. 145:8,9 Salvation is by the grace and mercy of God (Eph. 2:8–Tit 3:5) The problem with God is that He is holy and cannot overlook your sins. Should He let you into heaven with your sins it would corrupt heaven and make it like earth. God has to have a way He can be just (right) and yet be able to forgive sins. He just cannot be right to let you off with one sin. He is God and hates sin with an holy hatred. When Adam sinned God said that the penalty was death. This is the requirement of a just and holy God. One can get away with murder in our courts, but nobody can get away from God’s just judgment for their sins. Would God be just as a judge, to forgive and let you into heaven when you deserve His judgment for your sins.? There was no way an holy God could forgive sins apart from a just judgment of those sins. We could only reap that judgement by going to hell, the prison house of all spiritual criminals. Here is God’s mercy toward us; For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 There was nobody able to satisfy God’s justice by bearing the judgment of sin, but His Son. He became a man to “put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” (Heb 9:26) You must repent of your sins to get God’s mercy and forgiveness, “That repentance and forgiveness be preached in His name (Luke 24:47)
