Former Provincial Chairman for the ruling People’s Party (PP) in the North, Frank Mwenefumbo, has finally decided to contest as an independent candidate in Karonga Central Constituency. Speaking to journalists after collecting his nomination papers, Mwenefumbo, a runner- up in PP’s primary elections held last year in the constituency, said that his decision to contest as an independent candidate comes after being consulted by his supporters. Mwenefumbo lost to Cornelius Mwalwanda. He then accepted defeat and pledged to support Mwalwanda in the forthcoming tripartite election. Mwenefumbo added he decided to take his supporters’ advice [to stand as an independent because Malawi is a democratic country, believing the true picture will be seen after the May 20, 2014 elections. However, he dismissed assertions that his decision means he is leaving the ruling PP.
