Former South Australian mare Avoid Lightning seems to be enjoying her new surrounds as she wins the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes for new trainer Les Bridge. Tim Clark gave her a lovely run in transit, and she stormed down the outside to hit the front inside the last 200 metres, though survived a late lunge but the unlucky Plucky Belle, who was held up for a run at a critical point in the straight. Darleys consistent mare Aerobatics was third, but while the runner-up will be better for the run, all honours go to the winner, who showed strong potential in her earlier days. It is the turn of the two year old fillies as they lineup for the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes over 1200 metres. In a wide open betting race where most of the favoured runners are drifting in price, and the favourite is the Team Hawkes filly Lady Sharapova, who was third on debut in the Talindert Stakes at Flemington. Gerald Ryans Inglis Classic winner Peggy Jean and stablemate Tetsuko are chances, while Peter Moody-trained Bring Me The Maid and David Hayes-trained Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes winner Clifton Red also has claims, as does the Darley filly Wedding. Open race with no real form line to compare, but sticking with Lady Sharapova. Runners are about to head onto the track.
