‘Former’ Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Ben Phiri’s father has died. Mr. Misheck Phiri aged 77, died last week of Cardiac Failure on 27th July, at St. Francis hospital in Katete and was laid to rest on Sunday, 30th June, 2013. The late Mr. Phiri, traveled to Lusaka at the beginning of May and witnessed the swearing in ceremony of his son Ben Phiri, at State House on 10th May, 2013, which appointment was shortly after revoked. The senior Mr. Phiri is reported to have been affected by the revocation of his son’s appointment to the extent that he even stopped taking his meals regularly. His last days were said to have been characterized by gloomy moods and he is reported to have gone back to Katete a very sad man, family members have told the Watchdog. Meanwhile well placed sources have revealed that President Michael Sata may reappoint Mr. Ben Phiri to the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health as Permanent Secretary to be in charge of Community Development. This is seemingly to make up for the humiliation and embarrassment he caused Mr Phiri and his family leading to the death of the head of the family. Mr. Phiri was appointed Luapula Province Permanent Secretary to take over from Mrs Annie Mwewa who had been in office for two months before being moved to Cabinet office as Permanent Secretary Administration. Mrs. Mwewa had succeeded Ms Miyoba who only served for a few days after the appointment of Ms Ing’utu Suba could not be taken up. Mrs. Mwewa is wife of Agriculture Deputy Minister Rodgers Mwewa. Ms Suba has since moved to Cabinet office as PS responsible for Special Duties while Ms Miyoba is Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary. No one has yet been appointed Permanent Secretary Luapula Province. Mr Phiri’s appointment was revoked before he even travelled to Luapula.
