Forty-four years ago, while on a visit to the former Soviet Union, I experienced this kind of cold. Standing outside in line with hundreds of others waiting to view Lenins tomb, I suddenly felt weak and dizzy from the -18 degree temperature. Realizing I was about to faint, I broke from the line, triggering the attention of several guards. But I was too quick for them and raced across Red Square and into the giant GUM department store where I found a wall to steady myself. Two old women quickly came to my aid, felt my forehead and spoke numerous words to me, none of which I understood. They then took hold of me and ushered me to a room where there was a nurse and she made me lie on a sofa. I was restored in about ten minutes and thanked them all.
