Foucault is not against the rehabilitative ideal. What he is - TopicsExpress

Foucault is not against the rehabilitative ideal. What he is against is a particular medico/crimino-/psychiatric-gaze that reproduces domination in the name of helping people. So the trouble with a lot of the rehabilitative gaze (as constituted by crim/psychiatry/medical discourse) is the overemphasis on rebellion against authority as the primary problem, which we need to correct. So rebel against authority, and get labelled oppositional defiance disorder. But in contrast, excessive obedience to authority is regarded as much less of a problem (e.g. authoritarian personality not in the DSM). This means, that people who rebel against rebellion (i.e. so teenagers who rebel against the normality of rebel without a cause). So the problem is not too little social control (as it is with rebels without a cause) but too much social control. These people arent a threat to social order so their problems tend to be ignored. So by focusing on the rebels without a cause (it reproduces stereotypes—how many people imagine teenagers as out-of-control people who lack control over their instincts.....), it is because it reinforces a sense of Society must be Defended from such rebels. But it would be better to describe the concern is class society must be defended. The problem with rebels against rebellions is their ideas are so imaginative, critical, creative etc. that they worry that their peers (and teachers) wont understand their ideas. So this is some explanation as to why the best paper when I was a TA, was written by someone who said absolutely nothing. It is easier to write down her ideas for a TA, then risk the confusion, and pathologization that might arise from risking talking in class (risking the classmates not understanding her). So there is a fundamental distinction between authority-figures and truth. So people might be rationally rebelling against authority figures who prefer their authority over truth. Or they may be irrational rebels, where they are rebelling against truth and authority-figures. Are you challenging me, Mr. Wallace?. The student preferring truth to authority, challenges authority, and because the teacher prefers his authority over truth, he asserts his authority by punishing the challenge to his authority as claiming a monopoly on truth. https://youtube/watch?v=Ebd7LxjaIaw
