Found this among my writings from 2007...thought it appropriate for now! I have learned as life goes on that people that come from various ethnic backgrounds, have small differences. We, African Americans think that we have cornered the market on our own culture, yet there are others that study our culture and think they know us better than we know ourselves. I have found both to be far from the truth. This belief system is tainted in that we as a people don’t really understand each other especially when we don’t have an understanding of who we are or what we’re dealing with. We think we know what’s best for others but the one who knows best is the one with the problem. In this time that I have been involved in community (some 28 years), there has been very interesting things that I have found and that is that nobody truly has all of the answers. When you ask the one with the problem, they sometimes don’t realize there is a problem. When you ask those brothers and sisters that think they know, you realize that the glasses they are looking through might be dark colored glasses that limit their ability to see clearly or they could be like bifocals that bring all of the problems into close view. When you ask those in society that think they’ve mastered what’s best for others, you find that they don’t have a clue what is going on, simply because for one reason or another they identify the problem based on what they see or they become so busy trying to be the problem solver that they never identify with the people their seeking to help. The greatest problem solver is the one eternal true and living God. He sees all, knows, all, started it all and will end it all. To this end, I truly hope that one day we can all come together and do as a world famous stylist once told me in his class “lay down what you think you know at the door because you have picked up bad habits along the way in this field that make you think you know more than me, yet I am the teacher and if you are going to be a student then you must come in knowing nothing, then I can help you to master your trade”. If we take this approach to helping people, we will help them to come to the realization that alone, none of us knows anything, but, together we can come together to learn how to solve the problem at hand. When we reach this point, the glory will go to the one that created us and we can all shine with him! Karen Dublin
