Found this mail pretty interesting !!! Smart career planning post B.Tech Inbox So, you have a campus offer and your joining is in August or may be as late as December. You think it will be good to just chill at home and get pampered by parents. Bad idea!! Here is why: • You are not getting paid for sitting at home. Four months difference could mean ₹1 lakh in lost salary!! • Want to do MBA or MS? Experience counts. Earlier you start, the more experience you have • If slow down sets in, the company might withdraw the campus offer – ask you seniors We got these insights from a young man by the name of Praveen Naganur from 2012 batch, who studied in an engineering college in North Karnataka and had a TCS joining which was delayed. What initially looked like a bad news turned out to be a blessing. Due to family’s financial constraints he joined a much smaller company called Attra as it had an immediate joining. Every one advised him against it as salary was “lower” and 3 years bond. Today he is a very happy man. His batch mates who waited till March 2013 for the joining, are now lost in a large company, did not get any exposure, want to change jobs but not getting any and to make it worse got paid lesser money (read do not go by CTCs). He in turn got great hikes, has niche skills which are high in demand, got lot of responsibilities, exposure and direct mentoring from seniors which resulted in higher confidence and better growth. Do not go by CTCs / Hikes matter CTC do not tell the complete picture. Here is why • Many companies add components which you will not get in cash to CTC to make it attractive. Example – Relocation allowance, Medical insurance, gratuity etc. • Training period stipend could reduce first year CTC significantly. So for example if your CTC is 3 lakhs per annum and for first six months you get paid ₹15,000 per month – then the actual salary for first year will be ₹2.4 lakh per annum only. This makes a company with CTC of ₹2.65 lakhs but paid from day 1 is better than a company with CTC of ₹3 lakhs. This is one of the many reasons why a company like Accenture scores much higher than other of its contemporaries. Equally there are companies like Raremile in eLitmus portfolio which works on latest technologies and within 6 months takes your salary to ₹3.5 lakh from ₹2.4 lakh. TCS/ Cognizant/ Infosys etc offers great training or food court but NOT career This is not our opinion but that of hundreds of our test takers who are willing to apply to other companies through eLitmus even as fresher and letting go of their experience. Good training, fun life and nice campus were some of the reasons why they had decided to join them at first place. Do not take our word for it - reach out to any senior of yours and you will know less than 10% of freshers get good quality work. Choose young small companies over Large IT services companies In case you have offer from both and are confused - prefer small companies which have been in existence for less than 5-7 years, that will be a safer bet. Do not be worried about it closing down. You would have learnt so much that even if the company closes down - you will have hundreds of more jobs because you know your stuff. However avoid small companies where the founder pedigree is not great. Also if you have a choice – take stock options and settle for a lesser salary Last but not the least – get a pH Test Score irrespective of fact that you have job or not If you do not have a job, you should hurry up as by 30 Jun 14, we expect around 1190 positions from various companies (currently Attra with 100 positions is already active). Also taking the test early will help you understand your shortcoming and give you enough time to reappear with preparation if you get a lesser score. Purvi Gupta from KNIT Sultanpur 2013 batch took the test first time on 5th May 2013 and followed it up with another test on 18-August-13. She could land herself a job which offered her ₹5 lakh per annum with MAQ software. There are numerous such examples. Equally there are hundreds of candidates whose dream company recruited in Nov 2013 and they took the test in December 2013/ January 2014. In today’s world of uncertain business environment it is impossible to predict when your dream company would hire through off-campus. Also if you try to take the test just before your dream company is hiring – what if you score poor or the pH test center capacity is reached and you are unable to attend the test. As they say “early bird catches the worm”
