Four years ago, I met a slightly overweight dog with a pushed in - TopicsExpress

Four years ago, I met a slightly overweight dog with a pushed in face, an underbite, a tongue that seemed a little too long for his mouth, and a stumpy tail that wagged crookedly. This bulldog, named Richter, was funny looking and totally adorable at the same time. He was skeptical of me and definitely a bit standoffish at first, no doubt thinking, Who is this strange girl taking my owners attention away from me? Im not really sure Im ok with this... But over time, and after a good amount of bribery with treats and toys, I started to win him over. We became buddies and eventually roommates. Richter and I genuinely enjoyed becoming a close part of each others lives. We even slept in the same bed together....that is, after I learned how to tune out his deafening snore! I soon realized that not only had I fallen in love with my now-husband, but I was head over heals for his dog too. As time went on, my love for Richter only grew. He brightened up each and every day and became a true part of my heart and soul. I knew the day would come when I would have to say goodbye, but I certainly wasnt ready when it happened on Sunday. Not only is my heart broken over the loss of Richter, but it is also broken for my husband who is suddenly without his best friend and daily companion of 9 years. Everything I feel is only a fraction of what he is going through, and there is little anyone can do to make it better. As painful as all of this is, I sit here feeling like the luckiest person in the world for getting to spend four years with this amazing dog. And I know the many people whose lives he touched are feeling the same way. I will miss Richter more than words can express. He took a part of my heart with him when he left, and not a day will go by where I wont think of him. Now it may be with tears, but I know in time it will be with a smile.
