Fourth in a series of short videos as I work on new songs. Im always taking note of song ideas as they come. I review these from time to time and most get tossed back into the emptiness from where they came. Out of many new sketches and notes, Ive been working with about 30 songs that have survived my selection. Some were seeds planted over the past few years that I wasnt ready to sow, but most are more recent. Im taking the time now to develop these (in no particular order) to fulfill several purposes: • This is my new repertoire that Ill use as a basis for the next step Ill take with my band, live and on record. • By playing drums with the midi-demo versions of these songs (like the video here captures) I have an opportunity to go deeper into what they are to me – what type of platform for discovery they each provide. I dont plan what Ill play. The songs I compose are meant as vehicles for improvisation. This process helps me to refine each song as I develop my drumming. • These videos could be enjoyed by others. Perhaps theres something useful here for other musicians as well. Thats why Im making them available.
