Frank Zappa: Joes Garage (Act I). (From the album Joes Garage (1979)). There are many who have the appellations unique, individual, non-conformist and so on, applied to them, and in their way they probably are - but in most cases thatd be only in a way that pretty much conforms to some kind of convention or other; even the Hippie movement became its own conventionality, really... However... if theres one person who could most completely claim to be all of those things listed above, it was Frank Zappa... Zappa was very fair: he lampooned pretty well all aspects of convention equally (including Hippies: he was sometimes labelled a Hippie (just because he was unconventional in this era), but rejected the label vehemently, and described himself thus: Never a Hippie. - Always a freak - never a Hippie...) This album is written up in our Hidden Treasures section. I describe it as my introduction to Frank Zappas music - and how I consequently had to support myself against a lamppost as I walked home with the album playing in my Walkman: it was THAT funny... (Passers-by looked at me funny and gave me a swerve as they walked by - I think that Zappa would have approved of my behaviour - and my rejection by society at that moment..!) What is also unique about Zappas music is that as well as the laser beam intelligent humour and lyricism - it is also high quality composition and musicianship. Ya gotta be careful on our page about what ya can post from Frank Zappa (hes not the messiah, but he can be a very naughty boy!), so heres the opening track from the album - its simple, but its so well written that it gives us some understanding about the whole Zappa ethos - and about the music scene at the time...
