Fredrik Croneborg of Sweden is the winner of the inaugural Challenge Atlantic City, a 141-mile ultra-triathlon contested in the back bays of Atlantic City, the roads of Atlantic County, and the streets (and Boardwalk) of Absecon Island. Croneborg, a pro triathlete from Sundborn, Sweden, finished the Ironman-distance event in eight hours, 31 minutes, 47 seconds, beating second-place Scott Defillipis of Normandy Beach, NJ, by six minutes, nine seconds. Croneborg was in fifth place after the 2.4-mile swim, and seventh place after the 112-mile bike segment, but made up ground in the 26.2-mile run, taking over first place at about the 18-mile mark before hitting the finish line at Kennedy Plaza on the Boardwalk. Laurel Wassner of New York City, who has a remarkable personal story, was the female winner of the Challenge Atlantic City. Wassner, a survivor of Hodgkins Lymphoma, finished the race in nine hours, 29 minutes, 20 seconds. Local competitor Eric Schrading, 47, of Galloway, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Pleasantville, was the top local finisher in 9:50:48.
