Free Range Talk op-ed writer Deborah L Born has a purposeful overview of how the early summer rash of political threats should be handled and quashed. _______________ "The latest attempt at idiocy is revealed by Think Progress to be a threat against Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine. In a Tea Party-sponsored conference call held on Wednesday night, a participant called for the assassination of Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) over her support for immigration reform. Prominent conservative policymakers Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)’s communications director Stephen Miller and Heritage Foundation research fellow Robert Rector also joined the call, hosted by the conservative Eagle Forum group. The thing is, no one involved in the call said this not a good thing to do, or thought of what happened to Gabby Gifford — it is tremendously scary to contemplate the reaction of someone like Jared Loughner to such gunpowder. Someone needs to make an example of one of these stupid loudmouths before we have another tragedy. That someone is the FBI and/or the Secret Service. I know it isn’t the thing to give them attention or prosecute someone for being an idiot but they need to be made to stop and think before speaking in such a reckless manner. This summer is going to be hot enough to cause explosions of temper anyway and this sort of thing thrives in the hot air of summer. The threat of a five year prison term might do a bit to keep these episodes of big mouthiness from leading to tragedy but only if the government does its job."
