Free at last, free at last. Thank the Lord, Im free at last. Just sent my final ms back to the publisher, and I even took time to scooter out to my favorite persimmon tree to gather a supply for Pauline, the ultimate persimmon afficianado. (Dont even ask; Id have to dispatch you if I divulged the location--notice I didnt use the s word to avoid a visit from the feds who would miss the joke.) Anyway, its been a mostly stimulating two years, except for the past cleaning-up-the-ms weeks. My copy editor, Kathleen Capels, has been stunningly good. Don Kraybill, my friend and colleague, says theres no such thing as a good author--just great editors. It may be a bit of an overstatement, but not much. Anyway, this is the first day of the rest of my life, and I feel greatly blessed--and relieved. P.S. If you have any suggestions for a good indexer, that will be my last major responsibility: I cannot pay premium wages but decent, or at least helpful ones.
