Free events coming up in all 5 boroughs - enjoy! Laughter in the Park 2014 in Manhattan Laughter in the Park is a free, outdoor comedy series that takes place over the course of five weeks throughout the summer. Every Sunday (except for Saturday, August 2), you can catch two hours of standup performed by some of comedys most innovative and talked about artists. Its all for New Yorkers, and its all free. Location: Mineral Springs in Central Park, near West 68th Street When: Sunday, July 27, 2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. For more information: nylaughs.org/online/home.html Red Hook Flicks: Fried Green Tomatoes in Brooklyn Red Hook Films are shown at Valentino Pier, on the Brooklyn waterfront. The screen is set up in front of a Civil War-era warehouse, with sweeping views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop. This film tells the story of a housewife who is unhappy with her life befriends an old lady in a nursing home and is enthralled by the tales she tells of people she used to know. Location: Valentino Pier, Ferris St. between Coffey St. and Van Dyke St. When: Tuesday, July 29, 8:30 p.m. For more information: redhookflicks/ Music: Ariadne Auf Naxos by Richard Strauss performed by the New York Opera Forum in the Bronx The operatic team of composer Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo Von Hofmannsthal boldly mixed musical and literary traditions in their one-act opera Ariadne auf Naxos. The opera was originally intended to follow a performance of Molières comedy-ballet The Bourgeois Gentleman (1670), with incidental music by Strauss, and it was first performed in this form in Stuttgart on Oct. 25, 1912, with the composer conducting. Location: Bronx Library Center, 310 East Kingsbridge Road When: Saturday, July 26, 2:30 p.m. For more information: nypl.org/events/programs/2014/07/26/music-ariadne-aux-naxos-richard-strauss-performed-new-york-opera-forum Shakespeares Two Gentleman of Verona in Queens The Hip to Hip Theatre Company presents a slapstick comedy about love, friendship, betrayal, forgiveness and a young dog. Young Proteus only has eyes for his hometown sweetheart until he lays eyes on his best friends love. This is a zany tale of romantic rivals with lightening changes in affection, a maiden in disguise bandits, and one of Shakespeares funniest clowns. Location: 35th Avenue and Cross Island Parkway in Crocheron Park. Event to be held on the grass area along 35th Avenue, off the Cross Island Parkway, across from the pond. When: Thursday, July 24, 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. For more information: nycgovparks.org/events/2014/07/24/shakespeares-two-gentleman-of-verona Through the Lens Part 1: Exploration through Photography series in Staten Island Join local award winning nature photographer Jarred Sutton as he presents After Hurricane Sandy: A Look at Conserving Our Seashores & Marshes, a Staten Island Arts Grant funded program. Jarred will share photographs including scenic views, plants, and wildlife from his trips along the Northeast shoreline. A slideshow presentation on their beauty and importance in our ecosystems will be followed by a short photo hike along the beautiful trails in the Staten Island Greenbelt.
