Free martial arts advice: If/when BJ Penn looks at you like this, tap. On Sunday Im flying down to Los Angeles to film some stuff for a new documentary on BJ. How many students have you had thru your school over all these years? How many BJ Penns do you get to teach? How many Keenan Cornelius? Whooo, what a thing. My expectation? That these two, along with the 10,000 or so other martial artists Ive been lucky enough to cross paths with, use their skills, their passions, their powers --and grow up to be the most remarkable role models of engagement, kindness, involvement, and wisdom. Their careers, like all of ours I think, are just beginning --and what a great foundation to have. Martial artists, like BJ, like Keenan, like you (I hope), will --and are --redefining the role of the martial artist, the martial arts, and the martial arts school in todays world. Keenans already working on behalf of charities like Brian Cimins autism awareness events and The Alabama Martial Arts Build-Vention 2014 --and, of course, BJs been championing his Penn Hawaii Youth Foundation for a number of years now --providing training and leadership for at-risk teens. I have some very fun(ney) stories of BJ from his beginning as a martial artist ---however, I really think his best stories and his most important contributions are yet to come. His career, to date, has been about gathering the tools hell be putting to work in the next part of his career as a citizen-teacher and martial artist.
