Free speech is great. It rocks my world. Free speech your so fine, your so fine you blow my mind hey free speech. Im doing it right now. What happened in Paris last week was horrible and the people who did those horrible things were lunatic monsters. OK I have covered myself there. Its great that the west has come to terms with its secularism. Unfortunately other parts of the world are not as progressive as we think we are or they are. In other parts of the world religion is still an incredibly personal thing because others around the world do not enjoy the pluralistic society that we have come to take for granted. Other parts of the world still rely on spirituality to find a meaning to life which the west find in material goods, celebrities, environmentalism, politics candy crush saga yadda yadda yadda. I dont think it is very progressive or left-wing to depict a sacred prophet of the worlds second most followed religion in such an unflattering manner. I think it once again shows the incredible ignorance of the west claiming intellectual superiority over a subaltern. People devote their whole lives to this particular religious figure and the cartoon in my opinion openly mocks that devotion. All this to get more people to take notice of how edgy a magazine is. It is actually pretty stupid to do this only 14 years removed from 9/11 with Islamaphobia still rampant. It doesnt help matters, it actually makes things worse especially after we bemoan the actions of ISIS in the Middle East (They are morons too I cant stress this enough). If I were a Muslim and I am not, I would find the cartoon hugely condescending, culturally ignorant and offensive. Being left wing and progressive means to be understanding and sympathetic to every person of every belief on every corner of the earth on the hope to achieve a completely egalitarian society. Thats the point isnt it?? Or am I missing something. Openly mocking the beliefs of others does not fit this criteria. The first step to world peace is to not draw silly pictures that disturb an already angry hornets nest and actually use a little bit of tact when communicating to others. Oh and the reason nobody cares about the 2,000 dead in Nigeria is because nobody cares about Nigeria as it is of no use to anyone. That is just the reality Im afraid. By the way Im agnostic.
