Fremantle Herald: BURKE BACKS GRAVES CLAIM Nyoongar elder Richard Wilkes’ claim that Arthur Head could be a major and unrecognised gravesite for Aborigines has been backed by archaeologist Shane Burke. Dr Burke, a lecturer in archaeology at Notre Dame University says it’s “highly likely” there would have been Aboriginal deaths at the Round House and the bodies simply buried nearby. He believes some skeletons may still be there despite extensive disturbance in the area, noting the mystery of the gravesite of the only European to have been hanged at the site, 15-year-old murderer John Gavin. But Dr Burke says there’s a tendency for developers to simply hide any skeletons they stumbled across: “It happens all the time. It happened in North Fremantle and in Swanbourne.” by STEVE GRANT (June 27, 2014)
