Frequently Asked Questions.. Question: Can I get cavities under fillings? Answer: Absolutely! If your tooth has a filling already, a cavity can still develop on another surface of the tooth and migrate under that existing filling. Silver fillings have been the primary filling of choice until the late 1980’s and these fillings will almost always allow cavities to develop under them. Being they are 50% mercury which expands and contracts to hot and cold temperatures just like a thermometer does. Mercury expands and contracts to hot and cold temperatures just like a thermometer does. When the mercury contracts the filling pulls away from the tooth and allows bacteria to get under the filling causing a cavity. When the filling expands it causes small fractures in the tooth that also allow bacteria to get into these cracks and allow a cavity to develop. Todays’ modern “white” or composite fillings do a much better job not allowing these cavities to develop like silver fillings. They form a permanent bond to the tooth which returns the tooth’s strength up to 97-98% of the natural state. Not to mention they actually look like teeth! This is the only filling material we use at Cottonwood Creek Dental!
