Fresh out of Divinity school, he was visiting hospice for the first time to see a church elder, Myles, who had befriended him on his first morning as pastor. He was nervous because he knew that the people lying in the beds inside were not necessarily coming out as they had gone in. A year earlier, Myles had burst through the parsonage back door, shouting his greeting, Pastor, where are you? Im here to welcome you! I thought youd be up. Instead, Ill serve you two what I brought - breakfast in bed - hot coffee and warm muffins! Myles stomped up the stairs and into the pastors bedroom, where aghast, the pastor and his spouse lying abed said to one another, Hes not coming in here? Is he? He did. The next week, Myles was diagnosed with cancer. Over the ensuing weeks and months, he received treatment. He and his doctor fought hard, and Myles even imagined tiny laser-shooting spacecraft flying in his bloodstream, blasting his cancer cells to smithereens. His hospice nurse explained that hospice provided comfort through pain management and kindness, but never treatment nor extraordinary measures to extend life. Myles insisted, Im not dying. But it was his time to go. Lets Pray: Dear God, call my soul each day and let me hear, so what when my time comes to go, I will be ready. Take fear from me, and let Your love live inside me. Protect me from suffering. Bless those who dedicate themselves in service to hospice. Give them strength and wisdom. When You are ready for me, and when I am ready for You, welcome me Home. Amen. Heres a Thought: Make me ready, O God.
