Friday, 11/22/2013 On your cell phone, please text RELIEF to UNICEF (864233) to automatically donate $10 to the Philippines relief efforts. 5:30am Well...something good happened to me yesterday, so I should have known more bad news was around the corner. At 3am, I had to take Dayline to the emergency room. She was in obvious pain and extreme discomfort. Im in a very frustrating situation...I need to take care of Dayline and Nicole, but I have almost no money left. At this point, all the cash I have On hand is the money I need to go to Cebu to get more cash. Ive already borrowed 10,000 pesos from Daylines relatives. At this rate, a big chunk of the cash I can get in Cebu will be used to pay off loans. Hmmmm. Expats play a huge role in the Philippines economy, but the banking laws, and the government, dont seem to want to recognize that. Why is it so hard and so expensive for expats to bring US dollars here that they are going to spend on the Philippines economy...which, by the way, has never done that well on the world stage; they need to take advantage of whats in front of them. Im on the verge of being disgusted by the way they treat expats here. 6am Hmmmm the generator stopped working here. Were paying a premium for a room with a private bathroom and electricity and air conditioning...700 pesos per day, instead of 300 for a bed in the hallway. Right now its better conditions in the hallway, but Im stuck paying the higher price. 8:30am The generator came back online. 10:15am A surgeon came in and gave Dayline an exam, telling me that she was referred to him as a possible case of appendicitis. Now we are awaiting the results of some urinary lab work. 12pm I have been sitting, off and on, all morning in the busy hallway outside Daylines room in the OB section of the hospital...lots of pregnant girls, and most are alone or with someone who appears to be their mother or sister; a few of the girls are with Filipino men, most likely husbands or boyfriends, I suppose. However, I have not seen any other foreign men, and I know that it is a popular pastime of expats to come here and get girls pregnant then leave. Every day I fight the greedy and self-serving reputation that Expats before me have left in their wake...many people here, especially beautiful young girls, have been irreparably hurt. Although it has made it very hard for the few expats like me, I dont blame the Filipino people one bit for developing their untrusting attitude towards almost all foreigners. Sometimes I am surprised at the low expectations and standards that have been set for me. 4pm Ive been here with Dayline for over 12 hours, with very little having been done. Theyve put Dayline on an IV... as far as I can tell they are just electrolytes and a 5% sugar water solution (5% Dextrose in Lactated Ringers) which they charged me 2400 pesos for (about $60). I really doubt they would make a Filipino pay that...but Im one of those stupid rich Americans, right? Riiiiiiight :-p 9:20pm 18 hours in the hospital and counting. It was an eventful afternoon (early morning in Arizona). I got a very positive text from Samantha...it sounds like my US family is really stepping up for me, and I appreciate it, but I wasnt really expecting it. I knew this would be difficult, and I am prepared to sleep in the bed that I made. Dayline and have shared many tears together over the last week, vowing our love to each other and to baby Nikki as we watched our opportunities to communicate with my family fade away, along with our money supply. No matter what happens, we will be together forever. If we can make it thru this, the rest of our lives will be a walk in the park (all in relative terms, of course). The hospital has begun to get a signal on one of the cellphone networks, so I plan on calling my mom and Samantha in a little while. :D
