Friday 19th 2013 Front Page Headline: Police ‘absence’ Increasing crime related issues in Lae city THE deployment of police to provide security for the local level government elections has left Papua New Guinea’s second largest city vulnerable. Reports from Lae suggest criminal elements have capitalised on the ‘absence’ of the Royal PNG Constabulary and targeted local businesses and individuals in various parts of the city. On Tuesday afternoon, while police were monitoring the LLG elections, store goods valued at thousands of kina were stolen by opportunists at the Papua Compound. According to an eye witness, a truck with goods belonging to a Chinese national was on its way to the shop when it was held at gun point. The driver, a Chinese national, watched helplessly as men, women and children helped themselves to the goods and whatever they could get their hands on and walked home. Police and security guards who arrived at the scene later were not able to identify the suspects as most of the looters were children and teenagers. On Wednesday evening, before the State of Origin game kickoff, Bundi Camp youth who were on a drinking spree were allegedly attacked over an incident that occurred early this year. Stones were thrown during the clash with some of the missiles landing on the roof of a trade store adjacent to the Nawaeb Block bus stop. Hearing the commotion, the property owner came out to investigate only to be attacked which resulted in the death of a young East Sepik Province man. The deceased was allegedly shot in the head by an unidentified man. Yesterday youth from the Nawaeb Block retaliated and torched down the trade store and a nine bedroom unit belonging to a Western Highlander. Police were alerted and arrived at the scene but were not able to contain the situation. In another in a separate incident, criminals held up a man and escape with his vehicle after stabbing him. The victim is now at the Angau hospital. Attempts to reach the Lae Police Metropolitan Commander Iven Lakatani yesterday were unsuccessful.
