Friday, December 19, 2014 Argentine Players Winning Awards Angel DI MARIA has won the Olimpia de Plata (Silver Olimpia) award for Argentina’s best foreign based footballer of the year, beating out Lionel MESSI. This award is voted by the country’s top sports journalists. This is the first time since 2006 where MESSI has failed win the award. However he is still contention to win the Ballon dOr as he is shortlisted among the three based players of 2014. The equivalent award for the best domestic player went to Lucas PRATTO who has just completed a big money move from Velez Sarsfield to play in Brazil for Atletico Mineiro. Meanwhile in Italy, Carlos TEVEZ and Gonzalo HIGUAIN won the Gran Gala del Calcio after being named in the Serie A All Star of 2014. Both Carlitos and Pipita were voted by the Italian Players Association as the best strikers to play in the Italian League in 2014. However HIGUAIN couldn’t attend the award as Napoli President has refused to allow his players attend the ceremony. A big congratulation to all the award winners!
