Friday Flash I Love... Love: what an overused word! Of course, I use it for everything. I love to fish. I love fantasy football. I love dipping eggs. I love good music. Speaking of music, this is the time of year I begin to hate Christmas music. You know, that station on the radio where they play all Christmas music, all the time. It starts out all wonderful, but by now they play the same three songs every hour. First a little rock and roll, then a little jazzy, then a little bluesy. If I hear All I Want for Christmas is You by Whitney Houston or Mirah Carey or whoever it is one more time…well, somebody just shoot me. This is the time of year I long to hear the old hymns, sung a cappella, or played with handbells, or performed by children. Now, that I love! But I digress. We claim to love lots of things, dont we? We throw the word around loosely. Maybe thats why Pee Wee Herman once retorted, If you love it so much, why dont you marry it? This weekend Ill be preaching on The Gift of Love. Im pretty excited about the message that stirring in my heart. The scripture text is Matthew 1:18-25. Love is a pretty amazing gift, and its amazing that God keeps giving it. Not because we keep failing to receive it, but because giving love is simply Gods nature. I believe with all my being that love is at the heart of the universe, in spite of what we read and how we might feel. Christmas is the celebration of that love come down into the real world where we live. Even a world filled with overused sentiments and really bad Christmas music, divine love continues to keep coming down. And that love changes everything. Blessings, Jeff Howell
