Friday Friend-Appreciation Day: Today, I tip my hat to my pseudo-sister, Diem Tran This week, I want to give a shout out to my friend, Diem Tran. I met Diem at Sutra, a popular Hamster-den in South Orange County. She was there with a group of friends with whom I had also connected. Diem was different than the other women at the club; she wasn’t dressed provocatively, she wasn’t inebriated and like me, she had found a quiet little corner from which she could people-watch. What started with some pleasant conversation soon segued into a blossoming friendship. Over time, we ran into each other whenever our group of friends ended up at the same venues and we grew closer. Before long, she had become like a little sister to me. We shared texts about our relationships, our work, our outlook on life and everything in between. She came to my engagement party and like a sister, she was always there for me when I needed to vent. Of course, this meant that I got to hear things from a woman’s point of view. Her insights were invaluable, largely because she is not like most Orange County women. She has a positive outlook on life, possesses no semblance of materialistic tendencies and genuinely believes that good exists in most people. Diem is more of a sophisticated woman, with a strong sense of family as evidenced by the way she takes care of her parents. I’ve always admired that about her, especially the fact that she makes many sacrifices to make sure her parents are well taken care of. She’s the type of friend that is always there for her friends…the type you could call day or night to come rescue you a person. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Diem mad and I’ve certainly never heard her say a bad word about anyone. Her positivity is infectious and her sweet disposition wins people over quickly. She’s extremely well educated but is very humble….a rare thing, in some circles. Despite the obvious warning signs in a recent relationship of mine, she remained supportive and was always around to lend sympathetic, non-judgmental ear. To her, I’m quite sure that I’m the black sheep among her friends…I’m the person that keeps her on edge in social situations because she never knows what I’m going to say next. She’s seen me at my best and my worst, yet she’s always been there for me. So Diem, I celebrate you today and I thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life.
