Friday July 19 Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Last year I took a trip out to California. I was running I-40 west and stopped just outside of Albuquerque for a coffee and oatmeal, my favorite ‘on the road’ meal when traveling alone. When I came out there were a couple of old cowboys leaning against a truck talking, right by my bike. I said hello and we struck up a conversation. One of the cowboys asked me where I was headed. I told him California and he said “you ever ride 60 across?” I said, “nope.” He said “you ought to.” I said, “I will.” We both laughed and then he told me a little history of the road. I thanked him and got on to leave. As I was getting ready to pull out he said, “better make sure you filler up before you head out across.” I said thanks again and hit the road, excited about exploring a new road, especially one remote enough that he felt the need to tell me to fill up. Highway 60 across New Mexico and Arizona is a great ride. It’s about 160 or so miles across through some mountains on either end and a long, straight, high mountain road in the middle. About half way through, in the middle of nowhere, is the Very Large Array which is operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Basically its 27 large satellite dishes spread out over several square miles listening for ET to give us a call. I stopped to take a picture and it was so remote I just stopped in the road, got off and walked away. I could see for a couple of miles in either direction so no one was going to run over my bike. I took my picture, got back on the bike and as I took off I noticed up ahead that everything seemed really white but surly it was just a mirage or something. It was a bright sunny day, with the temperature in the high sixties. All of a sudden I’m in the middle of a freshly fallen 4 inch deep hail storm. It was like someone had drawn a line and it went from dry road to no road. Everything was covered in 4 inches of soft, slick, ice. I never get scared on a bike. I’ve been in all sorts of situations where I should be scared but, up until this incident, I’ve never even been very nervous. But here I was on a big heavy motorcycle, at least 20 miles from anyone or anywhere, on an ice covered road that I couldn’t see. And it all looked that way as far as I could see. I actually caught myself shaking, thinking if I drop this bike I’ll never get it up because it’s too heavy and I won’t be able to get enough traction, I’d slip down trying to pick it up. I told myself to quit being a sissy and calm down, it’s just a motorcycle ride, you’re not going to die. You might fall down and be here for a day or so but you won’t die. I couldn’t turn around, it was too slick. I couldn’t stop, it was too slick to hold it up, and so I just eased along, hoping to be able to stay on the road. Then I see a vehicle coming up behind me. It was a little truck. They passed me and I was able to get in their tracks, see the road and run on relatively dry pavement. I rode the next two miles or so and then just as suddenly as it appeared, it was gone. That was a memory I’ll never forget and I’m glad I experienced. Here’s my point. Our lives can be like that ride, we go along thinking we’ve got a clear path ahead when all of a sudden we’re in the middle of something and we have no idea where to go or how to get out. That little truck is like God; if you allow him to, he will get in front of you and guide you safely to the other end. Or perhaps, God wants you to be the little truck for someone else. Think about it and have a great day!
