Friday July 4, 2014. Young drivers to be trained A select group of twelve (12) young Jamaican drivers are to undergo official training over the next three days, courtesy of the governing body for motorsports locally, the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC), through a grant from the world governing body, the Federation Internationale le Automobile (FIA). The Young Driver Training Programme being organised by the JMMC through funding approved by the FIA. Two United Kingdom based trainers are currently in the island to conduct the process, set for July 4-6, 2014. Colin and Helen Elstrop have been involved in motorsport for over 20 years; both are self-employed racing instructors dividing their time between places closer to home such as Croft Circuit in Darlington, or further flung frozen lakes in Sweden where they offer winter rallying tuition with Ice Driver. This training programme consists of a range of theory input as well as skills development. The material to be covered is outlined below. Driving theory to cover: The importance of fitness in motorsport Performance Driving Techniques Road Handling characteristics Driving Skills Development Driver knowledge Personal Fitness The right mental attitude Nutrition Goal Setting Personal Safety Safety of others Practical Skills to include: Track versus road Vehicle safety features Rev limits Braking techniques Steering Racing lines Heel & toe techniques Overtaking rules and safety aspects Vision and planning There will be no cost to the participants to do the training. Workshop sessions will be held at the Spanish Court Hotel and track training at the Palisadoes go kart track. The twelve candidates are: 1. Thomas Issa 2. Sabrina Sirgany 3. Chris-John Addison 4. Timothy Stewart The project is possible thanks to an FIA grant with additional funds coming from the ASN and local sponsors combined. The project is being supported by Xsomo International, Stewarts Auto Group (who will be providing the cars for the practical sessions), Trade Wind Citrus and the Spanish Court Hotel. This is the first of two projects that will be done this year through grant funds from the FIA. The second will be a continuation of the Motorsports Officials Training programme started in 2013.
