It starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, and Randy Quaid. It was about aliens coming to take over the Earth, and the humans who try to stop them. It was a blockbuster smash hit, and really solidified Will Smith as a big time movie star. When Bill Pullman, who played the President, is giving his big speech before going into the final battle, what is significant about the location and the day that it was filmed? Answer: The scene was filmed on August 6, 1995, which was the 50 year anniversary of the U.S. dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. The building that they are standing in front of is a hangar that used to house the Enola Gay, which was the plane that dropped the bomb. OTHER FUN INDEPENDENCE DAY FACTS: Originally the U.S. military had agreed to support the film by letting them shoot on actual bases, and consulting with the actors about making their portrayals of military characters more realistic. However, when they learned that there were references to Area 51 in the script, the military backed out. Will Smiths line, And what the hell is that smell? was unscripted. The Presidents role was originally written with Kevin Spacey in mind, however, a studio executive passed on the idea of casting him. The executive thought that he didnt have what it takes to be a star. The squadron that Will Smiths character belonged to was staying at El Toro Air Force Base. This is the same base that the Flying Wing Bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on the aliens in the original 1953 War of the Worlds movie was stationed out of. To get the effect of cars landing on cars, they used cranes dropping hollowed out cars on to other cars that were loaded with explosives. Much of the dialogue in the scenes between Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch, and Jeff Goldblum and Will Smith were improvised.
