Friday. Miles and miles away from Memphis and the past and the strange mystery of chance encounters and stars in their courses and I cant seem to muster much energy to do more than sit here and stare at my computer and all the green and red lights flashing signs of the living and breathing dragon of the securities and commodities markets. I feel numb about the passing of John Fry, founder of Ardent Studios in Memphis. To my mind it truly is the final setting of the lid on a truly blessed epoch in Memphis music. As a college course elective at Memphis State, I took a music recording and production class taught by John - of all things it never occurred to me to record his lectures. He was a gentleman of the first order: amongst all the post punk malcontents with misguided haircuts like myself, assorted hippy leftovers, spandex wearing Metal-Hair-band tragedies, and some wonderful African-American church musicians, John stood before us each class wearing a poplin suit, starched button down shirt, club tie, and polished loafers. The world stopped in his presence and as corny as it may sound, you felt electricity and magic in his wry but warm and friendly smile. He was a very nice man. Damn.
