Friday night essay by paul knibbs cc. 1961-2061 " the creaking pillars of a dead empire " However much I deplore the involvement of what is left of our armed forces in another civil war in " a foreign country of which we know little " , I fear that yesterdays vote in the mother of parliaments has set an ominous precedent ! That a country which holds a permanent seat on the united nations security council can abrogate its responsibilities in such a cavalier and selfish fashion cannot bode well for great Britain . Thirty years ago , troops in the falklands suffered from trench foot , 68 years after the somme , because they did not have high leg boots ,as every other army did . Some 20 years ago the whole world looked on in amazement as the most famous steeplechase in the world , named after the grand nation , was reduced to a humiliating farce because it was still being run in the same manner as it had been 150 years before . Yesterdays vote signalled another collapse of a creaking pillar of a dead empire . Do lions begat mice ? How can a country that produced a Napoleonic pitt , a berlin congress Disraeli , a great war Lloyd George , a Churchill and a thatcher produce such political pygmies ? I firmly believe that humanities moral compass was set for eternity by the british peoples onbowed stand against the satanic evil of hitlers Nazism " never was so much owed by so many to so few " . Can so much be expected now ? Surely the worlds most powerful nation will no longer consider us their closest ally ? Surely those European nations that view us with respect as the british lion will now see us as a neutered old tom cat sleeping in the sun daydreaming about bygone glories ! What does the future hold ? A un security council meeting where the other permanent members , probably including india , offered a seat as a check to Chinese ambition , smirk behind their hands and wink at eachother as they listen with mock respect to our redundant opinions ? A country whose voice is listened to as much as finlands , thailands or perus ? Do lions begat mice ......the british lion has bumped its gums .....and SQUEEKED ! ( THERE....that should put the cat amongst the pigeons ...WHOSE FIRST ?!! )
