Friends - many of you know that the E man has had a seriously ugly time of it this school year. While puberty and middle school often dont mix well, Es challenges & tremendous anxiety have made for many a sleepless night and lots of tears (not just for Tom). Our family life in general has had a lack of harmony despite an increase in medications for nearly everyone. Last week, we made the heart wrenching decision to have Elliott attend partial school days at a much smaller, more structured school setting. To say that the new schedule change disappointed him is an understatement times 100. By yesterday, his anxiety and frustration had reached new levels, and Ada was learning a lot of new vocabulary words that are likely not going to thrill her 2nd grade teacher. Today - the new schedule started, and I thought for certain Id get a phone call from one school or the other letting me know something really ugly/unfortunate was going down - the call never came. At 3:15, my face pressed against the window in a less than attractive fashion, the bus pulled up, and the E man clomped off in his giant winter boots and bid his new driver goodbye. The front door opened, and he walked in with a giant smile on his face and said I think I love it! Yes, I know it was but one day, and likely some more really hard days are in our near future, but for today, I celebrate his success, the mountains of courage and hard work it took for him to deal with this change, and the fact that despite all the second guessing and fear we faced, my ASD mom gut remains firmly in tact. Bring it, E man!
