Friends, My dear brother Stephen has nominated me for the #ALS #icebucketchallenge. ALS is a horrible disease, and I support efforts to develop a cure. I also support efforts to alleviate the suffering of its victims in the meantime. As a person who believes that life begins at conception, I cannot support an organization which actively pursues cures based on embryonic stem cell research. Guaranteed harm in exchange for possible help does not sound like a square deal to me. I intend no judgement or condemnation toward those who have participated or who will participate, but I will not join you. Stephen, I hope you can forgive me as I let the 24-hour deadline slip past. I will open my wallet to ALS research, but first I feel it necessary to do more research of my own. I’m very grateful to be surrounded by people with big hearts and generous spirits. May God give us all the grace to continue growing in generosity and love.
