Kisan Tehreek holds its one day working committee meeting in Anantnag Anantnag, August 26: According to a press release issued to Sachnews Jammu Kashmir by Jammu and Kashmir Kisan Tehreek (JKTT) today held its one day working committee meeting in Anantnag, which was presided over by veteran Kisan leader Abdul Hamid Wani. Addressing the meeting General Secretary Kisan Tehreek G.N.Malik deliberated on the aspects of agrarian crisis saying that in the backdrop of liberalization agriculture is increasingly becoming unprofitable. The scene of widespread commercialization of agriculture, where farmers have turned to commercial crops has become increasingly loss-incurring. Malik said that the entire crisis in agriculture is rooted in the policies of economic reforms which have created conditions of deep distress among the peasant community adding that the push towards commercialization of agriculture economy linking it to the imperialist controlled world market under so-called globalization has already caused disaster particularly for the poor peasants. Stating that major crops particularly apple have been witnessing a sharp decline in productivity on account of spurious chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides Malik said that the agriculture sector is facing unfair competition from cheap imports, threatening the livelihoods of those associated with agriculture and allied activities. Alleging that whenever natural calamities cause damage to the fruit and crops, the General Secretary JKKT said that the worse affectees are assured compensation and even surveys are conducted but no relief reaches to them. Maintaining that mere assurances and surveys cannot satisfy the peasants he urged the government for initiating practical measures to provide timely relief to the affected growers. The committee adopted following resolutions demanding:- 1. Ban on spurious chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides and constitution of a commission of inquiry to look into the matter and fix the responsibility. 2. Interest waiver on horticulture loans on account of the heavy losses suffered by the fruit growers. 3. Implementation of Crop Insurance Scheme across the State. 4. Construction of cold stores in fruit growing areas for storage of different kinds of fruits, especially apple
