On that Darkest day during the 2nd world war on 7th March 1941, This day became known as “Black Friday.” That sad afternoon when the enemy attacked with 10 bombs. The outcry in mourning and pain for years to come, 41 workers were killed. Many families and friends were badly injured or without a love one. On that afternoon the first air raid siren alert was sounded at 13.35 and 5 minutes later at 1.40pm when a Enemy Heinkel 111 made its 1st pass over the factory at 1,000 feet when four 500 lb bombs were dropped on the works and the bombs deternated. Two hit the factory, One hit the edge of the works and another hit the works shelter at the back of Stanley Street. The plane then turned west and circled around before dropping one 1,000 ld bomb which failed to explode. The factory was also machine gunned before leaving. At 14.24 the Alert was sounded and another enemy plane attacked the works while rescuers were assisting the casualties. It dropped four 500 lb bombs lucky failed and didn’t exploded but one 1,000 did exploded causing a number of casualties and some damage. Two minutes Two minutes isn’t much to give, To those who fought and died, And not forgetting loved ones, Who Till this day have cried. To Flanders fields where poppies grow, Our thoughts return to long ago, And in remembrance they still live, Two minutes isn’t much to giveA Tributes to victims of the Factory bombing, they will not be forgotten Roll call of 41 Names and former address Who Died * Name Address Age Gender Died after AdmissionTo Hospital London Rd Cemetery Grave Ref No E – East W West Size Date of Interment A – Z By Row (1) Adams, George Harold Henry 77 Millgate Newark Age 45 Male Plot E D 307 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 14.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (2) Andrew, Wilfred Evelyn 48 Chestnut Avenue Newark Age 39 Male Plot E D 303 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 11.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (3) Ash, Olive 14 Portland Street Newark Age 31 Female Plot E K 253 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 14.03.1941 No Tombstone Found (4) Ball, Bertie Augustus 6 Newstead Avenue Newark Age 18 Male E Q 207 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 13.03.1941 No Tombstone Found (5) Beale, Ernest Patrick, 38 Appletongate Newark, Age 27, Male, Plot W G 288 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 13.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (6) Beaver, Edward, 15 Roseberry Hill Mansfield 26 Male, X Mansfield Crematorium Buried in Mansfield Record, Plot 21506, No Tombstone Found (7) Brown, Harold Vincent, 5 Charles Street Newark, Age 44, Male, E Q 149 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 12.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (8) Castle, Vivien Maud Elston, Near Newark, 18 Female No Record (9) Cooper, Winifred Hall, 12 Pinfold Lane Balderton, 30 Female X Record * Buried St Giles Church Balderton Found Tombstone in Balderton Church yard (10) Cottam, Edna May, 27 William Street Newark, Age 19, Female, Plot W T 303 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 13.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (11) Cummings, Gladys, 42 Welbeck Avenue Newark, Age 21, Female Plot E D 305 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 15.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (12) Dixey, William Joseph, 65 Bowbridge Road Newark, Age 62, Male, Plot E O 145 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 12.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (13) Fowler Frederick, Long Street Great Gonerby, Grantham, Age 39, Male, No Record (14) Godridge George William, 28 Lime Grove Newark, Age 29, Male, Plot E H 247 * Buried ,in Newark Cemetery 14.03.1941 No Tombstone Found (15) Grant, Robert Barnsdale, 3 Sleaford Road Newark, Age 47, Male, Plot E G 237 * Buried in Newark Cemetery Yes Tombstone Found (16) Green, John Henry, 9 Marton Road Newark, Age 55, Male, Plot W G 308 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 11.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (17) Grocock, Horace, 115 Millgate Newark, Age 47 Male, X Buried In Barnby- in- the- Willows (18) Gyde, Albert Robert, 60A Barnbygate Newark, Age 42 Male, Plot W S 305 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 13.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (19) Hall, Rose Ellen, 19 Long Row Newark, Age 30, Female, E I 151 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 13.03.1941 No Tombstone Found (20) Hanger, James, 6 Cedar Avenue Newark, Age 29, Male, Plot W R 300 * Buried in Newark Yes Tombstone Found (21) Hardie, Thomas McHugh, 56 Milton Street Newark, Age 26, Male, Plot E D 304 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 12.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (22) Hayden, Sybil Harriet, Ivy Farm Kirklington, Age 34, Female, X No Record Not Found (23) Kirton, Joyne May, 21 Guildhall Street Newark, Age 18, Female, No Record Not Found (24) Lambert, Lily, 59 Bowbridge Road Newark, Age 22, Female, Plot E H 249 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 11.03.1941 No Tombstone Found (25) Lambley, George Felix, Marton Road Newark, Age 39, Male, Plot W D 178 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 11.03.1941 Yes Tombstone Found (26) Makins, Edith, Green South Collingham Church, Age 21, Female, Record South Collingham (27) Mann, Frederick William, “Manville” New Balderton, Age 46, Male, Plot E G 238 * Buried in Newark Cemetery 13.03.1941 No Tombstone Found Location his grave is next to Grant, Robert Barnsdale (28) Markwell, Frederick, 114 Hawton Lane New Balderton, 50, Male Record Balderton St Giles Church Yard ?
