Friends, if you reside between 2222/Mopac/360 and 183 please take action on this matter so that our community issues will receive proper city council representation! CALL TO ACTION - PRESERVE NW AUSTIN AS A COUNCIL DISTRICT The Independent Citizens Redistricting Committee (ICRC) drew a draft map for NW Austin (District 10) on September 28th that kept our NW Austin communities together. The September 28th map created a southern boundary that started mainly at 2222 in the southeastern corner, ensuring that our NW communities would be able to have a city council representative who’s focus and concerns would FINALLY be NW Austin concerns. Many residents testified (and emailed) that this was the preferred map for our region, and the NWACA board issued a resolution unanimously supporting the map that kept our focus north of 2222. Simply, the community engagement and comment process worked – NW Austin had a region that could be represented by a person who could finally put our interests first. Unfortunately, on November 6th, the ICRC started over and completely disregarded the many emails and public testimony from our NW Austin community, and put us in a council district with Tarrytown, Brykerwoods and Rosedale. While these are wonderful communities, their issues and concerns are very different from our area. And, because of the population density of Tarrytown, Brykerwoods and Rosedale, their sheer numbers will dictate that a city council member will be forced to focus on the voters in those areas, over our own important concerns in NW Austin. This has HUGE and potentially negative consequences for NW Austin: 1. NW Austin transportation issues will not be addressed. 2. NW Austin wildfire issues will not be addressed. 3. NW Austin policing issues will not be addressed. 4. NW Austin deer and coyote issues will not be addressed. 5. NW Austin housing and zoning issues are very different and could be impacted. 6. School boundary changes could possibly take into account the new district boundaries, impacting our school capture areas. PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN - PLEASE GET UP AND: 1. Send an email to the ICRC that says: “NW AUSTIN INSISTS the District 10 that starts above 2222 – PLEASE go back to the September 28th map and move the southeastern boundary to Start at 2222, but to otherwise follow the ICRC map from September 28th. We mean no disrespect to Tarrytown, Brykerwoods and Rosedale, but NW Austin would like to remain with our communities of interest.” Please copy, paste and send this simple language to: [email protected] 2. Get in your car and go to one of the two remaining public meetings and sign up to tell the commissioners: “NW AUSTIN INSISTS the District 10 that starts above 2222 – PLEASE go back to the ICRC September 28th map and move the southeastern boundary of District 10 to Start at 2222., but to otherwise follow the ICRC map from September 28th. We mean no disrespect to Tarrytown, Brykerwoods and Rosedale, but NW Austin would like to remain with our communities of interest.” Here is the info for the public meetings: Public Input Meeting 13 November 13 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm The Lodge at 700 Dawson 700 Dawson Road Public Input Meeting 14 November 14 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex 1156 Hargrave St. The proposed District 10 that NW Austin is supporting (with minor modifications to move the SE corner to start at 2222) can be found at the ICRC website: austinredistricting.org/maps/interactive-preliminary-map Remember – You have one shot to make sure that the ICRC gets this right. This will last for 10 years. Do you really want to continue to hear complaints that the city council does not listen to us? This is OUR chance to have a city council district that elects a council person who lives in our community, shops at our grocery stores and who’s children attend our schools. Please ACT to make sure that we have a fighting chance to make this happen. Otherwise, expect to have other neighborhoods continue to elect a city council person for us.
